If you are looking for games to help develop skills to help you handle a tennis ball, a game you should try is this example of a great way for even beginners to develop skills necessary for success on the court is the following footwork drill easy enough for beginners. Use a person designated as coach, to lead the activity, and know that while the length of a single tennis court is adequate, a double length works best. Following the leader:
• Jog the complete length of the court
• Backwards jog
• Side step using a sliding to sideways running motion alternating feet spreading wide and then coming together to travel the length of the court
• The players face the coach, sliding and on the word 'turn' they face the opposite direction and continue to slide.
• Another variation is putting your hands behind you turned downwards; jog so that you kick your palm with your heel on each step.
• Carioca: Moving to the side, alternate crossing your left foot in front of your right foot and then behind it as you run sideways. On the word 'turn' players turn in the opposite direction and continue onwards.
• Wedel: Keep your feet together, jump slightly more sideways than forward, as if you were making quick turns on downhill skis, and repeat the motion.
• High-Knee Jog: Jog forward lifting the knees as close to your body, as high on your chest as you can. Leaning backwards slightly makes it easier.
• Jog and High Hop: Slowly jog along, then, at the word 'left' or 'right' hop as high on that foot as possible.
• Backwards Snake: Using small steps, jog backwards, and complete an S-turn every ten steps.
If Wimbledon has inspired you to pick up a racket and hit the court, consider getting in shape with some of these before mentioned activities, or warming up prior to each match by doing these activities. If you long to play but are not in a position to actually hit the courts, consider playing virtual tennis games instead.
