The Davis Cup competition started in 1900, the result of a challenge between the United Kingdom and America. It is the most prestigious event in international men's tennis. The Davis cup tennis tournament is the largest single annual international team competition in tennis, with Davis Cup tennis being governed by the ITF.

America has the best record for competing in The Davis Cup. The U.S. has had victorious Davis Cup results 31 times and were runners-up 29 times, second only to the Australians who have been Davis Cup winners 28 times and runners-up 18 times.

In 2005, 134 nations entered teams into the Davis Cup matches. The United States is the most successful nation to date, winning 31 tournaments, and finishing as runners-up 29 times. Australia is the second most successful, winning 28 times and finishing second 18 times.

The Davis Cup was actually born when four members of the Harvard tennis team decided to challenge students in the United Kingdom to a showdown tennis match in 1899. Once approval was attained from both schools lawn tennis associations, Dwight Davis organized what was to become the Davis Cup, using his own money to buy a sterling trophy for the winners. That initial match that began the legacy of the Davis cup, was held in Boston, Massachusetts in the year 1900. The Americans defeated the British in the first three matches. In 1905, Belgium, France, Austria, and a team combination formed by players from New Zealand and Australia (called Australasia) joined the competition.
