The Association of Tennis Professionals, or ATP tennis, began in 1972 as a means of protecting the interests of the men who played professional tennis with standardized rules, and regulation ATP tennis was born. In 1990, the ATP became the organizer of the principal worldwide tennis tour, thereafter known as the ATP tennis tour.

2007 ATP tennis presently has 5 categories of tournaments in its tour:

• Tennis Masters Cup (jointly with ITF)
• ATP Masters Series Tournaments

The ATP tour is also in charge of the World Team Cup tournament held in Düsseldorf each May.

The ATP tour has implemented some major changes beginning in 2009. The number of ATP Masters Series Tournaments will be reduced from 9 to 8, and Ending championships will be relocated from Asia to Europe. Plans are also being considered to eliminate Monte Carlo as a Masters Series event and reduce the purse there from $2.1 million to somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000. The Master's event in Hamburg may also be downgraded. It was also announced that there will be a new master’s series tournament held in Shanghai.

Further changes to the ATP tournaments in 2009 will be in the ranking system. These tournaments will be ranked according to four levels of importance:

• The four Grand Slam events
• Masters Series 1000
• Masters Series 500/Open 500
• ATP 250

It is believed that the top players in the last category will not be seen by the fans, but details are not yet finalized or known.

The details of the ATP Race uses "an easy-to-understand, simple-to-follow annual race from season start to season end. Every player starts at zero at the beginning of the year and the player who accumulates the most points by season's end is the World Number 1." The ATP defines the Race as being "the mathematical method of ranking male professional tennis players on a calendar-year basis."

The ATP posits that every player begins the year with zero points. Each of eighteen performance scores will be counted in each player's INDESIT ATP 2005 Race accumulated total. Each competitor who accumulates enough points to qualify to enter the Grand Slams and Tennis Masters Series matches counts each event and their other 5 best results from the International Series. The Tennis Masters Cup is counted as their 19th tournament, qualifying the top eight players to compete each year.
